19th December 2023 - The Swedish Court of Appeals ruled to uphold the sentence of life imprisonment given to Hamid Nouri who was one of the perptrators of the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in Iran. Hamid Nouri is a former deputy in the judicial system of the Iranian regime.
He was arrested in November 2019 following a court order in Sweden. After 93 trial sessions at the Stockholm District Court, on July 14, 2022, he was convicted of complicity in the massacre of political prisoners in 1988 and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was also ordered to pay compensation to the families of the victims.
Swedish-Iranian National at Grave Risk of Execution in Iran
In related news Amnesty International reported in December that; developments indicate that Swedish-Iranian academic Ahmadreza Djalali, who has been arbitrarily detained in Iran since April 2016, is at grave risk of imminent retaliatory execution. Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa Diana Eltahawy said: “The cruel toying with Ahmadreza Djalali’s life immediately after a Swedish court of appeals upheld the conviction and life sentence against former Iranian prison official Hamid Nouri over his role in the 1988 prison massacres, heightens concerns that Iranian officials are holding Ahmadrea Djalali hostage to compel Sweden into a prisoner swap.”
Amnesty Intl also said: “The international community, including Sweden, must immediately call on the Iranian authorities to halt any plans to execute Ahmadreza Djalali, end their shocking assault on the right to life, release him immediately, and put a moratorium on all executions. Iranian officials must be investigated for the crime of hostage-taking.”
At least two other political prisoners are facing protest related imminent execution since being arrested after the September 2022 uprising, that including Mojahed Kourkouri and Reza Rasaei.
